The Trager® Approach
A Gentle, Effective, Life-Changing Approach to Movement
The Trager Approach is a form of psychosomatic re-education developed by Dr. Milton Trager. It is essentially a dialogue between the practitioner and the client’s unconscious mind, expressed through gentle, flowing, almost hypnotic movements that calm the nervous system and release deeply held patterns of tension. The result is often a profound sense of relaxation, lightness, freedom, and peace.
More than simply bodywork, Trager invites the body and mind to rediscover what it feels like to move without effort or resistance. Many people leave a session feeling lighter, calmer, more spacious, and deeply connected to themselves. In a world where stress and tension have become almost constant companions, Trager offers a rare opportunity to slow down, listen inwardly, and reconnect with a deeper sense of presence and well-being.
Sessions often include soft sweeping movements, rocking, subtle vibrations, gentle stretches, and playful techniques, all delivered in a calm, restorative atmosphere. Each session unfolds with sensitivity and respect for the unique rhythm of the person receiving. By offering the unconscious mind new and pleasurable experiences of ease, Trager sessions promote neurological change, helping the nervous system relearn healthier patterns and sustain effortless, graceful movement in everyday life.
Over time, this work can support improvements not only in physical mobility and posture, but also in breathing, sleep quality, emotional balance, stress reduction, and overall vitality. Milton Trager described this experience as a place beyond relaxation, a place of peace.
Mentastics: A Playful Self-Exploration for Mind-Body Relaxation
Mentastics is a self-directed movement system developed by Dr. Trager to bring the benefits of the sessions into everyday life. It invites a playful exploration of gentle, flowing movements that can be done lying down, sitting, or standing. The focus is on moving with awareness, noticing tension, cultivating ease, and allowing motion to become effortless.
Through regular practice, Mentastics nurtures freedom and fluidity in movement, guiding the nervous system to let go of habitual muscular tension and invite greater ease. It encourages mindfulness, body-mind integration, and a sense of lightness that can be carried into daily activities, transforming ordinary movements into moments of ease and joy.
Even simple movements can become an opportunity to reconnect with yourself in a more gentle and compassionate way. Mentastics helps cultivate a new relationship with movement — one based not on effort and performance, but on curiosity, comfort, and awareness.
Trager and Mentastics: A Complete Holistic System
In essence, the hands-on table work and Mentastics movements are two sides of the same coin. The sessions offer a gentle, guided experience that helps the body discover new possibilities of ease and freedom, while Mentastics extends these sensations into everyday life through gentle self-directed movement.
Together, they form a holistic system in which the body moves more freely, the nervous system relaxes, and the mind experiences greater calm and awareness. This gentle yet profound approach supports not only physical well-being, but also emotional resilience, presence, and a more joyful way of moving through life.
How Does the Trager Approach Work?
The Trager® Approach engages the neuroplasticity of the brain: new information introduced to the unconscious mind activates positive neurological changes which improve movement patterns.
Physical reaction patterns are created through life experiences, emotional conditioning, injuries, stress, and environmental influences. Often, the body continues to maintain patterns of protection or contraction that were once necessary for safety or survival, but are no longer useful. Over time, these patterns can become unconscious habits that limit movement, vitality, and ease.
Such holding patterns may contribute not only to muscular tension and discomfort, but also to fatigue, stress, restricted breathing, emotional overwhelm, and a general feeling of disconnection from oneself.
The Trager® Approach allows you to become aware of these patterns and release them effortlessly, without force or manipulation. As the nervous system experiences new sensations of softness, freedom, and support, the body begins to reorganise itself naturally.
When you discover a new and easier way of moving and being, you often begin to feel better immediately. The more these new sensations are repeatedly experienced, the deeper they can go, gradually reaching even unconscious patterns of tension. As these deeper patterns begin to change, the nervous system can establish more balanced, natural and healthier patterns of movement that gradually extend into everyday life.
